If you feel like the walls are closing in on you after two weeks of COVID-19 fears, you’re not alone.

While cabin fever is not a clinical diagnosis, Dr. Kim Lavoie, who is Chair of Behavioral Medicine at the University of Quebec at Montreal and Co-Director of the Montreal Behavioral Medicine Centre, says those who are used to busy, social, and active lifestyles may be struggling in light of COVID-19.

What is cabin fever?

“Those experiencing cabin fever will likely express irritability, impatience, and potentially even aggression,” she said. “You feel like you’re losing control, and these feelings are a built-in mechanism to create space.”

Dr. Lavoie noted that social distancing and quarantine protocols will be most difficult for those who spend little time at home, those who like to be with other people or at work, and those who work in social fields like salespeople and teachers.
