Amid a rising COVID-19 case count, the situation on masking in Montreal-area classrooms remains very much a mixed bag. The Quebec government dropped its mandatory mask regulations for elementary and high school classrooms as of March 7 in most regions, but many students are continuing to wear them.
Dr. Kim Lavoie, Canada research chair in behavioural medicine and the mother of children in the Montreal school system, strongly disagrees. “We know the biggest risk of transmission occurs in places where you can remove your mask, in indoor spaces where people congregate,” she said. “You know if there are children involved, the exposure risk is high. And it’s rampant in the schools.”
