The Montreal Behavioural Medicine Centre (MBMC) is an academic research and training centre focused on behavioural medicine, including clinical trials and epidemiology. The MBMC is a collaborative centre between the Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux du Nord-de-l’Île-de-Montréal (CIUSSS-NIM), Concordia University, and UQAM, and is based at Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal (HSCM).

Position overview

The EMBRACE study (Evaluation of the impact of radical nutrition and Microbiome changes on BRAin funCtion and structure, https://mbmc-cmcm.ca/projects/embrace-project/) is a prospective observational study using bariatric surgery as a natural experiment to evaluate cognitive outcomes as they relate to drastic changes in dietary patterns and microbiota profiles. The study has a multi-disciplinary investigative team, which includes a variety of partners (researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, and policy makers). Multiple dietary, clinical, psychological, behavioural, and medical variables are measured pre-surgery, 6-months post-surgery, and 12-months post-surgery. EMBRACE is a multi-institution collaboration that is run out of the MBMC.

Under the direct supervision of Drs. Bacon, Lavoie, and Tair Ben-Porat, and in collaboration with the members of the research team, the selected candidate will be dedicated and focused mostly on a study which aims to explore how the dietary patterns and the gut microbiota change after bariatric surgery and the impact of these changes on brain structure and function.

Responsibilities:

  • Main responsibility: Perform and/or oversee biological sample collection and processing, using any related specialized equipment as per protocol requirements
  • Develop and/or maintain biological sample (blood draws, urine, and fecal samples) collection, storage, and transportation protocols and safety procedures.
  • Prepare biological samples for storage and transport to other facilities in compliance with the standard operation procedures
  • Track participant information using appropriate programs
  • Liaise with the other members of the research team to ensure the continued smooth running of the study
  • Collaborate with our data management experts to update databases (through the REDCap program)

The candidate will need to demonstrate:

  • Autonomy and ability to take initiative
  • Team work
  • Attention to detail
  • Experience in the collection, process, and storage of biological specimens
  • Experience in developing and maintaining quality control and safety procedures related to biological samples

Minimum required qualifications:

  • Licence to be able to draw blood samples
  • Fluency in both French and English (spoken and written)
  • Ability to use key MS Office Suite products as well as videoconferencing systems such as Teams and Zoom

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in conducting research
  • Experience with entering data using web interfaces (data entry via electronic tablets)
  • Experience developing REDCap forms for data capture
  • Experience working with special populations such as individuals living with obesity
  • Completion of Quebec medical ethics courses/certifications
  • Administrative experience including supervisory experience in a clinical or research field

Status and benefits:

  • Part-time position, around 15 hours per week, daytime Monday to Friday (usually mornings);
  • Location of work: Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal;
  • Starting date: as soon as possible;
  • One-year contract, with possibility of renewal (the project has been funded);
  • Salary in accordance with qualifications;
  • Pension plan (RREGOP) from the first day of employment.
